crippling depths

2025. Essay, English Language
in MACHINE PARALYSIS, A Different Kind of Mobility

Kyklàda Press, Athens

In 1952, gymnast Theophilos Klonaris choreographed the Mechanicos' dance, conceived as a performative tribute to men whose bodies were marked for life by the sea. A dance that has since become a motif for reconnecting the disabled bodies to the social sphere, and that was recently recognised as part of Greece’s “Intangible Heritage.”

With Crippling Depths, an essay published in the collective volume Machine Paralysis, Camille Pradon revisits the tragic history of the sponge divers of Kalymnos. Weaving together intimate narratives, collective memory, and archival material, tracing the physical and social consequences of the use of the diving suit within the communities of the Dodecanese.

The author thanks Adagp and the City of Rouen for their support of research and international mobility in 2023–2024, to Eleni Riga (Office of Hydrocommons x ATOPOS cvc), Nour Amrani & Katherine Li Johnson (Tunis to This), as well as the Klonaris, Pelecanos & Makrillos families.

conversations

2015 -.

Conversations is an editorial project made of interviews with directors and artists whose video-cinematographic works are characterized by a reflection on the places of cinema and its possible links with exhibition spaces and contemporary art.

This research work is driven by the desire to collect new testimonies, in connection with the conceptual and formal issues developed by artists. Their works accompany this attempt to reflect on today's cinema and, more broadly, on how they embrace this question.
